Why use an electric pressure washer?

So there are a few reasons why you might want to go the electric route when choosing a pressure washer.

  • Less expense.  Electric pressure washers or power washers are not as expensive as their gas cousins.
  • Less noise.  Electric pressure washers electric motors/compressors are only on when you pull the trigger on the pressure washer gun.
  • Less maintenance.  Electric pressure washers don’t require oil changes, air filters, and fuel filters, like gas pressure washers.
  • Easy starting.  Gas pressure washers start with a push button or switch, no need to pull repeatedly on a recoil starter.

Electric pressure washers are better than gas pressure washers

So there are a few reasons why I think electric pressure washers are better than gas pressure washers.  For one thing, you no longer have to go by gas and maintain it. Running out of gas in the middle of pressure washing your deck is a pain. By the way, gas is expensive, compared to electrical rates. You also have much less maintenance.  No oil changes, no changing air filter or fuel filters.

An electric pressure washer doesn’t stay on all the time, so you only have noise when you are actually using it. The electric motor only comes on when you engage the trigger on the spray gun.  Gas pressure washers engines drone on, all the time.  Which not only annoys you but also your neighbors.  Electric pressure washers are easy to start as well.  All you really have to do is plug it into an outlet, and push the power button or switch.  Can’t get much easier than that.

I personally switched to all electric outdoor equipment this past year, and I haven’t looked back.

Will an electric pressure washer work for me?

Sure they will.  Electric pressure washers are great at doing a lot of different cleaning tasks.

  • Cleaning and removing stains from driveways
  • Washing cars
  • Cleaning house vinyl siding and windows
  • Cleaning off decks and patios

Electric Pressure washers just work

Electric residential pressure washers are just as powerful as their gas cousins.  Many come with powerful motors with 1500 – 2000+ psi capacities which are more than enough power to handle most household chores.  A brushless motor pressure washer will be effiecnt and powerful.  Brushless motors generate enough power to rival gas powered pressure washers.  Most electric power washers are lightweight and easy to maneuver.

These power washers come with quick connect nozzles and interchangeable nozzles.   The nozzle spray tips, usually come in 0 degree, 25 degree, 45 degree and soap.  They either come with carts with wheels or are light enough to carry easily from place to place. Virtually all of the pressure washers come with a soap dispenser or detergent dispenser.

If you are looking for simple operation and amazing features, look no further.  Electric pressure washers only require a water source, usually from a regular garden hose, a 120V power source with a GFCI plug, and push of a power button to start.

Disadvantages of an electric pressure washer

The main disadvantage is that electric pressure washers do require an electrical outlet to work.  Most of them do come with 35 foot power cords, but you do have to be in the range of a power outlet. So that does affect the mobility of the pressure washer somewhat.

If you have some extreme cleaning to do like removing stubborn stains or oil stains from concrete, then an electric pressure washer may not work for you.  If you require water pressures in excess of 3000 psi, then you need to look elsewhere.  Electric pressure washers generally peak at around 2500 psi max.

What features should I look for in an electric pressure washer model?

Here are a few key features that you should look for in a good electric pressure washer model.

  • 30+ foot power cord with a GFCI (Ground Fault Circut Interrupt) plug.  This is must-have for safety
  • 20+ foot long high pressure hose.  The longer the better.
  • Maximum pressure rating of 1600 – 2000+ PSI .  Water stream speeds average 1800 – 2500 PSI
  • Multiple quick attach nozzle tips or nozzle attachments
  • Ability to apply cleaners either via a siphon hose, onboard soap tank, or detergent applicator.
  • Quick connect capability to attach nozzles and attachments.
  • Choose a brushless electric pressure washer. Brushless motors are more powerful and efficient.
  • Price range from $150 – $350

Top Rated Electric Pressure Washer 2021

Below is a list of six of the best available electric pressure washers for 2021.

Sun Joe SPX3001 2030 PSI 1.76 GPM 14.5 AMP Electric Pressure Washer with Hose Reel

This pressure washer from Sun Joe is sure to meet your pressure washing needs.  It has a powerful motor that generates 2030 PSI.  It also has a nice 1.76 GPM flow rate. It also has a wide range of attachments and the onboard hose reel for onboard hose storage is a treat. If you have ever had to try to coil up a power washer hose, you will know how useful a hose reel can be.

  • Powerful 14. 5-amp/1800-Watt motor generates up to 2030 PSI/1. 76 GPM for maximum cleaning power
  • 5 Quick-Connect  nozzles with spray tips (0º, 15º, 25º, 40º and soap) tackle light, medium, and heavy duty cleaning tasks
  • Onboard reel keeps 20 ft. (6m) high pressure
  • 35 ft. power cord with GFCI
  • TSS (Total Stop System): Automatically shuts off the pump when the trigger is not engaged
  •  Extra-large onboard 40. 6 fl oz detergent tank

What we like

  • Powerful 2030 psi will clean just about anything you need to at a home
  • The five quick connect tips are great, most pressure washer come with just 3 types of nozzles

What we disliked

  • Hose reels keep the hose tidy in one place but the hose memory is a killer when you need to unwind it
  • There just isn’t enough hose to be useful, you need 25′ minimum, but 30′ would be better

Greenworks 1500 PSI 13 Amp 1.2 GPM Electric Pressure Washer GPW1501

This Greenworks model is on the smaller size and would be great for handling those smaller cleaning tasks around the house.  This pressure washer would great for washing cars, spraying off your lawn mower, or cleaning off patio furniture since it has a carrying handle and is compact in size.

  • 1500 PSI at 1.2 GPM will blast through grime and dirt to restore your surfaces
  • Can be used vertically or horizontally for greater stability during use
  • Includes a 25° and 40° quick connect tip for a variety of cleaning applications
  • 20 ft. High pressure hose for greater reach.
  • Soap applicator to apply soap to completely clean any surface
  • 35 ft. power cord with inline GFCI for use on all exterior outlets

What we like

  • The small and compact design is super portable and could be stored in a small space in the garage or in a RV or boat for mobile cleaning.
  • The ability to have the pressure washer vertical or horizontal is a great plus to help with stability when cleaning

What we disliked

  • You trade compact size for performance, this is really only for small cleaning tasks, it just doesn’t have the power needed for more serious cleaning tasks like driveways and siding
  • It doesn’t come with enough quick connect tips only two and the hose length is relatively short

Greenworks 1700 PSI 13 Amp 1.2 GPM Electric Pressure Washer with Hose Reel GPW1702

Here is another pressure washer from Greenworks.  This pressure is unique in that it can be used horizontally or vertically, which you don’t see very often.  This model also comes with a hose reel to keep that 20ft of hose under control when the pressure washer is not in use.

  • 1700 PSI at 1.2 GPM
  • Can be used vertically or horizontally for greater stability during use
  • Includes a 25° and 40° quick connect spray nozzles for a variety of cleaning applications
  • 20 foot high pressure hose with hose reel
  • Soap applicator to apply soap to completely clean any surface
  • 35 ft. power cord with inline GFCI for use on all exterior outlets
  • onboard hose storage with included hose reel

What we like

  • It is powerful enough for small/medium jobs and has wheels for extra mobility
  • Like its nonwheeled cousin above this pressure washer can be used vertically or horizontally for added stability.  That really is a unique feature.

What we disliked

  • Like we mentioned previously the hose reel while a nice way to keep the hose from being in the way just introduces too much memory into the hose, which becomes a mess
  • I am going to keep deducting from Greenworks on this, but there aren’t enough included quick connect tips and the hose is needed to be a little longer, to make it more convenient.

RYOBI 2,300 PSI 1.2 GPM High Performance Electric Pressure Washer

This is one of RYOBI’s high end model electric pressure washers.  This powerful pressure washer puts out an impressive 2300 PSI when using the included turbo nozzle.  The design even mimics a gas pressure washer it competes with.  It will also allow you to get the job done with its 25 feet of hose, and large wheels from easy maneuvering.
  • 2,300 PSI 1.2 GPM
  • 13 Amp high performance brushless induction motor
  • 25 ft. non-marring high pressure hose
  • Onboard detergent tank
  • Professional metal spray wand with quick-connect coupler for easy nozzle changes
  • 35 ft. GFCI power cord
  • Onboard hose storage and accessory storage for user convenience

What we like

  • Plenty of cleaning power to clean up those outdoor surfaces with the 2300 PSI output and the metal spray wand is just more durable.
  • It might seem odd but the power cord doesn’t have a typical GFCI plug, it has a short extension which makes it much easier to plug into exterior home outlets

What we disliked

  • Would like to see a longer hose than 25′ in a higher end electric pressure washer.
  • As with most of these pressure washers the onboard detergent system isn’t great,  you can’t actually see how much water and detergent are in the tank, which makes it a huge pain when you are done with a cleaning solution.
